What are subjects?

Subjects are used by staff when setting homework, filtering the calendar or generating reports. Subjects can be created manually or via scheduled data imports from your MIS or Timetabler.

🔒 The actions within this article are controlled by the Subjects permission

View subjects

To view your school subjects, go to Tools > School > Academic structure > Subjects.

You’ll see a list of all existing subjects, including their active state. You can search subjects by name using the search bar above the list.

Actions

  • Edit - Update the subject name, short code or DfE mapping

  • Active toggle - Deactivate a subject to hide it from dropdowns (e.g. in Homework) without deleting it

  • Delete - Permanently remove subjects you no longer need

Removing a subject will not affect any past homework tasks associated with it, but it will no longer appear in filters or reports.

If your school uses XoD, Wonde or RM to sync subjects, you should delete the subject in your MIS instead. Otherwise, it may reappear after the next sync.

Create subjects

Each school will start with a number of subjects by default or have theirs imported via the MIS/Timetabler, but you may want to add new ones.

  1. Go to Tools > School > Academic structure > Subjects

  2. Click Create

  3. Enter:

    • Subject name - This is what teachers and students will see

    • Short code - For internal use or quick reference

    • DfE standardised subject - Choose the best match. If none applies, select ‘Other’

    • Subject head (optional) - Assign the staff lead

  4. Click Save

The subject will be immediately available to use across the platform.
