Our Detentions feature lets you set detentions and record their attendance in a few clicks.

Setting Detentions from My Detentions

When you click Detentions on your navigation panel, you will arrive in My Detentions. This is where you will be able to see all detentions relevant to you; either the ones you have already set or the ones you ought to cover.

💡 Top tip: If you cannot see a detention related to you, make sure you have selected the correct time frame using the date picker.

To set a new detention, click the green 'Set detention' button at the top right of your screen.

When setting a detention you will first be required to select a Reason and a Detention type.

Each detention type has an attached duration, hence when choosing the detention type, the duration will be filled in by default. If a school administrator has attached a location to the detention type, this will be filled in too.

If this is a repeat detention slot with a set start time and end time, then these will be pre-set as well.

You can write comments that will be shared with parents and students, and will appear with the detention details on their mobile app.

⚠️ Important: Please note that comments you write will be shared with all of your chosen detention recipients and their guardians, so please take care when recording sensitive information.

After filling in all required details, you can then select one or multiple students. Click Set detention and you are done!

Setting Detentions from Detention Types

If you are not quite sure which detention is appropriate for the type of behaviour you need to sanction, you can navigate to the Detention types tab at the top of your page.

This will show you all available detention types in your school and you will be able to view any notes written your school administrators.

Once you have found the appropriate type, click 'Set detention' at the bottom of its card. The appropriate details will be automatically filled in based on your selection.

Recording Attendance for Detentions

You can record attendance for any Detention you have created, those assigned to you, and even others covered by your colleagues.

To record student attendance, go to Detentions, find the detention you need to record attendance for, and click Record attendance.

On the sidebar, you will see all the students who were included in the same detention. You can quickly 'Mark all as attended' by checking the box at the top. You can then make individual adjustments to specific students.

Alternatively, to mark them individually simply use the dropdown menu for each student. Click Save to make sure attendance is recorded.

If you select 'Reschedule' for any student and then save your changes, this will automatically open up and populate a new detention form allowing you to instantly choose a new slot for your student(s).

Please note that schools with the MIS writeback module enabled will not be able to use the 'Reschedule' attendance option.

If you made a mistake or need to change attendance for a detention you can click ✏️ or 'View students' and the sidebar will pop up again. Make sure you save any changes.

If you need to delete a detention slot entirely, please click the red bin icon to the right. Please note that only users with Admin rights can delete detentions.

💡 Top tip: Any change you make to the attendance status will be communicated to parents and students via a push or email notification.

Detentions Report

If your school subscribes to our Detentions app, you will also be able to create a report to monitor all detentions given across the whole school.

💡 The XLS version of this report contains additional information including any associated comments for each detention.

MIS Writeback

If your school has access to our writeback feature, all detentions you record will be written back to your MIS automatically.

It usually takes a couple of minutes for the sync to complete, and it should never take more than 30 mins.

Please note that schools with the MIS sync enabled will not be able to use the 'Reschedule' attendance option as this is not available.

To delete a student from a detention select 'Cancelled' as their detention attendance status. If all students all marked with the Cancelled status, the Detention slot itself will also be deleted in Satchel One.

FAQs

Question

Answer

I want to remove a student from a detention, how do I do this?

Locate the Detention in question and select the Record Attendance option. On the student you’d like to remove, select the Cancelled option from the dropdown menu and save your changes. Alternatively, select the Rescheduled option and set a different detention for the student.

The cover teacher for the detention is sick/away/busy, how do I change the cover teacher for a detention?

If the Detention type had a cover teacher specified and it wasn’t empty (covered by N/A), the cover teacher cannot be changed.
