What are seating plans?
Seating plans allow staff to map out classroom desk layouts and allocate seats to students, supporting a more structured and intentional learning environment. They also provide easy-to-access data about students while during lessons.
View existing seating plans

Go to My Classes and select on a class of your choice, then click on Seating.
đĄ If you donât usually teach this class, you can search for it by clicking the đ icon at the top right of the screen.
Here youâll see any seating plans youâve already created for this class, while also being able to use the filtering and search options at the top of the page to see plans made by any colleagues too.
To edit or delete a plan, click the options menu ( ⫶ ) at the top right of the plan.

Create a new seating plan

Click the âCreateâ button at the top right of the page, give your new plan a unique name and pick the room youâll be using from the list. If youâd like to use a pre-made template, select from the dropdown list and press âSaveâ.
Click Create at the top right of the page.
Give your new plan a unique name.
Pick the room youâll be using.
Select a pre-made template from the list or skip this step to use a blank canvas.
Click Save.
If youâre using a template, you should see the preconfigured room layout. If you are starting from scratch, you will see a blank canvas with a teacherâs desk in the centre. Either way, itâs time to start customising your seating plan!
Place desks
Click Desks at the top left of the screen and choose a desk type that appears on the right hand side of the screen (no need to click and drag!).
Click on the canvas to stamp your seats individually or snap them close together to form a larger table - perfect for building your own custom desk shapes and making the room layout as realistic as possible.
đĄ Use the zoom controls in the bottom-left corner to adjust your view. Click the percentage to reset the zoom to 100%.
When youâre done, press Escape (Esc) on your keyboard or click the desk stamp again in the right-hand menu to exit the desk placement mode.
Edit desk layout
You can update the desk layout at any point by moving the desks.
Make sure to click on Desks first to enter the desk placement mode.
Grab the edge of a desk and drag it the new position.
Click Save on the Desks sidebar to finalise your layout.
Populate seats
Students
Click Students at the top-left.
A list of class members will appear, including key inclusion data.
Use the search bar to find students or apply filters for inclusion groups.
Drag and drop students into seats.
Custom seats
You can also use the Custom seat option to label seats for special use and ensure that students cannot sit there. For example, seats that inaccessible due to equipment or required for a learning support assistant.
Drag the custom seat onto a desk
Enter a label (e.g. 'Reserved for TA' or 'Equipment Area') and choose an icon
Click Done to finish adding the custom seat
Click Save on the Students sidebar to close the seats menu
Card details
Each student card has eight slots for displaying key data on the seating plan.
Click Card Details.
Use the dropdowns to select up to eight inclusion groups or assessment types*.
Drag items using the three horizontal lines (âĄ) to rearrange display order.
Click Save.
Some key things to note:
If a student lacks an inclusion indicator, the corresponding slot will be empty.
If a student has no assessment data, a hyphen (-) will be shown.
*Assessment data dependent on your licence.
Once youâve finished designing your template and have saved any changes, click Exit at the top left. You should now return to your list of Seating templates.
đĄ Your navigation menu will have collapsed to give you more space to work - click the menu icon (âĄ) on the top left corner to expand it.
Canvas actions
At the bottom left of your screen, you will see a menu with various options:
Zoom controls ( + / - )
Reset zoom to 100% by clicking on the current percentage.
Export image of plan
View full screen
The Full screen view offers a whiteboard-safe mode of the plan. Card details and additional student options will be removed to ensure that no sensitive data is visible.
Open the Options menu ( ⫶ ) at the top right of your screen for a couple more options:
Save as template - Add your desk layout as a reusable template.
Export - You can also export an image of your plan from this menu.
