What are Sanction rules?

Sanction rules define the behaviour patterns that should trigger follow-up actions, such as detentions or referrals. Once a rule is met, a recommendation appears on the Sanctions dashboard for staff to review and act upon.

🔒 The actions within this article are controlled by the Sanction rule setup permission

View rules

To view your schools Sanction rules go to Tools > Apps > Behaviour > Sanctions rules.

You’ll see a list of all existing rules, which you can search by name or filter by severity.

Actions

  • Edit - Rename or update the logic for a rule.

  • Delete - Remove a rule that is no longer relevant.

Create rules

To create a new sanction rule:

  1. Go to Tools > Apps > Behaviour > Sanctions

  2. Click Create

  3. Reasons: Select one or more reasons from the dropdown list

  4. Occurrences: Define the threshold, eg 2 instances of ‘Disruption to learning’ in 7 days. Pick a timeframe from:

    • last day

    • last 7 days

    • last 30 days

    • academic year

  5. Severity: Assign a severity level from 1 (low) to 5 (critical)

  6. Sanction type:

    • Detention - Allows you to select specific detention type.

    • Referred Incident

💡 Use a mix of low and high severity rules to surface both frequent low-level behaviours and serious incidents.

Once saved, the rule will begin monitoring relevant behaviour events automatically, and recommendations will appear in the Sanctions dashboard whenever a rule is met.
