What is the Student Submissions report?

Student Submissions is a report designed for monitoring submissions and grades for every student and homework task across the whole school. You can use this report to easily identify students who are consistently meeting or missing submission deadlines.

Remember that Online Submissions, Quizzes and Spelling Tests are automatically assigned a submission status and / or grade. For all other types of task, the teacher must assign a submission status and / or grade manually.

🔒 The actions within this page are controlled by the Reports permission

To access the Student Submissions report, navigate to Reports → Student submissions.

The Student Submissions report consists of two tables - ‘Submissions Summary’ and ‘Student Submissions’.

Submissions Summary

The Submissions Summary table summarises, for every student, the total number of tasks due for submission during the selected date range. It also shows how many of these tasks have already been marked with a submission status.

Each possible submission status is listed as a column heading across the top:

  • Submitted

  • Submitted Late

  • Partially Submitted

  • Not Submitted

  • Absent

Underneath each column heading, you’ll see a corresponding number to show the number of tasks each student currently has in that submission status category.

You can sort the table in ascending / descending order by any of the column headings. To sort, click the column heading - click twice to sort in reverse order.

Student Submissions

The second table (Student Submissions) displays the core details of every individual task due in for each student across the whole school - including the current submission status and grade. This allows you to easily identify specific tasks which are overdue and to follow up with those students.

Filter Student Submissions

The filtering options at the top of the page are used to filter the data within the Student Submissions report.

By default, the date range shows tasks with a due date over the past four weeks, but you can customise it to cover a different timeframe.

Since the Student Submissions report is typically used to monitor students' submission rates and grades, it usually makes sense to select a date range in the past. This is because work due in the future is unlikely to have been submitted or graded yet.

Select the date range you require and click Apply dates. The selected dates refer to when the task is due for submission ('Due date').

In More filters, you will find further options to refine the data in the two tables. Toggle on each setting to view all available options.

Filter the data by:

  • Students

  • Sex

  • Current year group

  • Current reg group

  • Due status

  • Task type

  • Subject

  • Issued by staff

  • Year group

  • Group

You can also choose to include or exclude the selected option in your dataset

Once your filters are selected, be sure to click Apply filters.

As an alternative, you can filter the data by any of the individual column headings. To do this, hover your cursor over the column heading and click the three horizontal lines.

A text box will appear. In the text box, type the word you’d like to filter by and press Enter on your keyboard.

Export data

To export either of the two tables in CSV format, click the blue button ‘Export data’ on the top right-hand side of the table. Any filters you have applied will be carried over.

The ‘Submissions summary’ CSV export contains the following additional fields, which are not visible on the web browser view:

  • Student UPN

  • Graded

  • Completed

  • Overdue

  • Inclusion group information (Yes or No) - SEN, EAL, MA, PP, FSM, SC, LAC

Use cases

The Student Submissions report is versatile and customisable. We’ve outlined a few common use cases below.

Identifying students missing deadlines

  • On the first table (‘Submissions summary’) click the ‘Not submitted’ column heading to sort the list and see which students have the greatest number of tasks marked ‘Not submitted’.

  • You could do this across the whole school, or delegate responsibility for senior / middle leaders to monitor a specific cohort of students. For example, a Head of Science could use the filters at the top of the page to identify students missing deadlines in their subject area - click More filters > Filter tasks > Subjects and type the relevant subjects, as shown below:

Identifying overdue tasks

On the second table ('Student Submissions'), click the ‘Submission status’ column heading to sort the list of tasks by submission status. This will help you quickly identify which specific tasks have not been submitted by students.

Monitoring teacher consistency

It’s very helpful for teachers to record submission statuses and grades on Satchel One consistently, even if the students' work was submitted on another platform. This helps establish Satchel One as the school’s go-to centralised location for monitoring homework.

It also helps increase student and parent engagement with Satchel One, and allows middle / senior leaders to accurately monitor submission rates school-wide.

To monitor whether or not teachers are consistently recording submission statuses on Satchel One, on the second table ('Student Submissions'), filter the ‘Submission status’ column and select the ‘Blank’ option:

This will show you all the tasks which have not been assigned a submission status by the teacher.

When evaluating the results, bear in mind the date range selected at the top of the page. By default, the date range shows tasks with a due date over the past four weeks. However, if you have selected a future timeframe, then a lot of the tasks shown are unlikely to have been submitted or graded yet.
