What is the Gradebook?

The class Gradebook displays each student's submission status and grade across multiple homework tasks in one view. From the Gradebook, you can quickly apply submission statuses and grades en masse.

View the Gradebook

šŸ”’ The actions within this section are controlled by the Gradebook and All homework tasks permissions.

To get started, click on a class and open the Gradebook tab. You can access a class through My classes or by using the šŸ” Quick search on the top right-hand side of your screen.

Navigate the Gradebook

At the top, you'll see filters and date controls which allow you to filter the homework tasks showing on the grid.

By default, the filters show all tasks due in for this class within the last month. However, each of these variables can be adjusted using the filters.

  • The All tasks option (includes tasks set by your colleagues) can be switched to My tasks (only tasks which you set).

  • The Due date option can be switched to Issue date.

  • The date range can be changed from the last month (default setting) to any other date range you desire.

The grid shows each homework task across the top. The column headers show some key information about the task:

  • Title (with a hyperlink to view the task in full detail)

  • Due date

  • Number of submissions so far compared to the number of students who received it

All the students in the class are shown down the left-hand side. At the intersection of a task / student is a cell showing the current submission status and grade for that student in relation to that task. If the cell is blank, it means no submission status or grade has been recorded yet.

Right-clicking on a cell brings up a number of options:

  • Task details - Shows key details about the task, including the title, author, issue/due date, type, and marking scheme.

  • Submission details - Shows key details about the student’s submission, such as submission date, grade, when the grade was added and by whom.

  • Set status - Allows you to change the submission status for a specific cell.

  • Delete - Removes the grade and status of the selected submissions.

Enter grades

You can apply grades to students' work directly on the Gradebook grid. Simply click into a cell and type a grade. Press Enter to confirm your input and jump to the next row.

If the grade you've entered doesn’t comply with task’s marking scheme, the cell will be highlighted red and your grade won't be applied. You can right-click on the cell and click Task details for a reminder of the marking scheme and its permitted grades.

To save time when entering grades, you can right-click any populated cell and hit Copy. Then, select one or more cells in the same column and right-click again to Paste.

To further speed up the process, you can paste a result into multiple cells within the same column by holding down Ctrl (or Cmd on a Mac) + clicking to select the cells before pasting.

After applying submission statuses and grades on the Gradebook grid, remember to click 'Save' on the top right-hand side to avoid losing your work.

Export the Gradebook

To export the class Gradebook, click the options menu ( ā«¶ ) on the top right-hand side, then Export.

Question

Answer

A student has been removed from a class but I'm still seeing their name on the class Gradebook. Why?

A student's name will continue to show on the class Gradebook if they were in the class when a previous task was set.

Once enough new tasks have been set, the grid will eventually only show tasks set after the student has left the class - at which point, the student's name will be removed from the Gradebook.
